Get ready to return to the land of Oz. Wicked: For Good heads to theaters on Nov. 21, marking the finale of the two-part movie musical that commenced with last year’s Wicked. Now, there’s even some talk about a third film in the franchise — though it may be a while before Ariana Grande’s Glinda or Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba are back on the big screen.
When asked about continuing the story by Variety on the red carpet at the premiere, director Jon M. Chu said that he’s seen “a lot of ideas flying around right now” but urged everyone to “enjoy this ride first.” Bowen Yang, who plays Pfannee in the film, said “I think we leave it here” when asked the same question.
During a Q&A session in Los Angeles this week, Grande was a bit more optimistic about continuing the Wicked franchise. “If we’ve learned anything from Cher, we can count on there always being another farewell tour,” she said in a video on her Instagram page. “So I don’t think anyone’s going anywhere.”
But before anyone discusses a third Wicked movie, fans going into Wicked: For Good may need a refresher on the first film’s plot.
What happens in Wicked?
Wicked, based on the Broadway musical adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel, which reimagines The Wizard of Oz, tells the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the green-skinned daughter of a powerful man in Oz. Elphaba, ostracized by her peers for her skin color, possesses rare magical powers. Professor Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) discovers those powers while Elphaba is dropping off her sister Nessa (Marissa Bode) at Shiz University, and she’s invited to join the school as Morrible’s new protege.
Elphaba gets placed in a dorm room with popular and pink-loving Galinda (Ariana Grande), whom everyone at Shiz University worships. But Galinda’s niceties are a facade, and she instantly clashes with Elphaba. So, too, does Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), a fun-loving prince who has come to Shiz University after getting kicked out of several schools, and he quickly strikes up a relationship with Galinda.
As Elphaba is navigating her tense roomie situation and learning new magical skills from Morrible, it’s revealed that something very bad is happening in Oz. Animals — who, in this universe, live among and communicate with humans freely — are losing their ability to speak. This includes Elphaba’s beloved goat professor, Dr. Dillamond (Peter Dinklage). Elphaba promises the professor that she’ll figure out what’s going on, telling him that she hopes the kind and good Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) will be able to help solve the problem.
After a prank Galinda pulls on Elphaba goes wrong, Galinda realizes that she’s been unnecessarily cruel to Elphaba, who, despite her outward appearance and prickly nature, is a truly good person. The two become best friends, and Elphaba is finally accepted by her peers. The one small downside is that she and Fiyero are developing feelings for each other — something that would surely interfere with her friendship with Galinda.
Things are really looking up for Elphaba when she gets a letter from her idol, the Wizard, instructing her to come to the Emerald City to meet him. Elphaba is ecstatic, knowing that he has the ability to grant wishes. (Secretly, she’s always wanted to undo her green skin.)
Elphaba brings “Glinda” — who has recently changed her name — to the Emerald City. They meet the Wizard, only to realize he does not possess real magic at all — in fact, he’s just a man from a faraway land known as Kansas. The real reason he wanted to meet Elphaba, a powerful magical being herself, was to have her read from a book known as the Grimmerie. When Elphaba does, she inadvertently conjures a spell that gives the monkeys of the Emerald City wings, allowing the Wizard to use them as his spies.
Elphaba, horrified by the pain she’s caused the monkeys, now realizes that the Wizard was behind the silencing of the animals — a calculated effort to give the people of Oz literal scapegoats for all their problems. The bad thing that’s happening in Oz is fascism — and the Wizard is behind the whole evil plot.
The Wizard encourages Elphaba to join his mission, reminding her that she’ll be loved by the masses, something she’s always wanted. Elphaba not only rejects the Wizard’s plan but also vows to stop it. She asks Glinda to join her cause, but a tearful Glinda says she can’t — she refuses to give up her popularity. The two friends part ways, and the first film ends with the people of Oz looking toward the sky where Elphaba, whom the Wizard has dubbed "the Wicked Witch," has escaped on her broomstick.
Where does that leave us for Wicked: For Good?
Wicked: For Good picks up years after the events of the first film. Glinda has settled into her role as a public figure in Oz and is in a relationship with Fiyero — who still pines after Elphaba. The so-called Wicked Witch, however, is now public enemy No. 1 and is being hunted down by the Wizard and his guards.
Will Elphaba be able to take down the Wizard, reunite with Glinda and maybe even smooch Fiyero? Fans of the Broadway musical already know what’s to come, but new moviegoers will likely be surprised by how the story of The Wizard of Oz is remixed.
Could there be a 3rd Wicked movie? Is there more to explore?
Technically, there is more source material to adapt. Wicked author Maguire wrote several other novels in the universe: Son of a Witch (2005), which follows Elphaba’s son; A Lion Among Men (2008), which tells the story of the Cowardly Lion; and Out of Oz (2011), which explores the Ozian civil war with Elphaba’s granddaughter Rain as the main character. Earlier this year, Maguire also released Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, a prequel featuring young Elphaba’s story.
While it’s possible for a new movie to come out of any of these works, it’s worth noting that the original Wicked novel is very different (and, tonally, much darker) than the Broadway musical from which the movies are adapted.
